How Perplexity Decides Which Sources to Cite

How Perplexity Decides Which Sources to Cite

Perplexity tracks Google’s own results far more closely than ChatGPT does, except where it doesn’t. Here’s where it follows the pack and where it goes its own way.

Perplexity is built to cite, not just to answer

Perplexity’s own help documentation describes it plainly: it searches the live web and returns an answer with numbered citations and a sources panel attached, every time.1 That’s a different design starting point to a general chat assistant that occasionally reaches for a web search when it needs to. Citation isn’t a feature bolted on top of Perplexity. It’s the product.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. A tool built around showing its sources has less room to quietly discard the pages it read without a trace, and it gives users a direct, visible list to click through and check. If your page is going to be read by Perplexity at all, there’s a reasonable chance it ends up in front of the user with a link attached, which is a meaningfully different bar to the one ChatGPT sets (see our piece on how ChatGPT ranks and cites brands for that comparison in full).

How closely Perplexity’s results actually track Google’s

The most useful data point here comes from Ahrefs, which ran a comparable URL-overlap study against Perplexity to the one it ran against ChatGPT: pulling citations across thousands of queries and checking how many matched Google’s own top 10.2 The results were almost the inverse of what they found for ChatGPT. For short, keyword-style queries, 65% of Perplexity’s cited URLs also appeared in Google’s top 10, and domain overlap reached nearly 81%. For longer, conversational queries the overlap dropped, as it does for every engine, but still landed at 28.6%, roughly four times higher than ChatGPT’s equivalent figure.

Ahrefs’ own conclusion was blunt: Perplexity’s results “most resembled Google’s,” reinforcing its design as what they called a citation-first engine.2 If a page already ranks well in Google for a topic, it’s in a genuinely strong position to be pulled into a Perplexity answer on the same topic, far more so than it would be with ChatGPT.

Where Perplexity goes its own way

None of that means Perplexity is a plain mirror of Google, and the gap shows up most clearly around community platforms. A Search Engine Land review of a 30-million-source citation study by Peec AI, published in March 2026, found Reddit to be the single most-cited domain across every major AI engine, including Perplexity, where it appeared alongside LinkedIn and G2 as a particularly strong source for B2B queries.3

An earlier Ahrefs analysis of 78.6 million searches, from June 2025, painted a slightly different picture: Wikipedia and YouTube were Perplexity’s strongest domains at the time, at 12.5% and 16.1% mention share respectively, while Reddit didn’t crack its top 10 at all.4 Read together, the two studies say less about which single domain “wins” and more about how quickly this shifts. A domain’s standing in Perplexity’s citations a few months ago is not a reliable guide to its standing now, which is exactly why relying on one snapshot study, including this one, is a mistake.

What that means for getting cited here

Two separate things earn a citation in Perplexity, and neither one substitutes for the other. Ranking well in Google still matters more here than it does for ChatGPT, given how closely the citation pool tracks Google’s own top results. Genuine presence on the platforms Perplexity leans on for community and expert opinion, particularly Reddit threads and, for B2B topics, G2 reviews, is a separate lever entirely, and one that traditional SEO work does nothing to pull.

For a business, that usually means two parallel efforts rather than one: keep doing the technical and content work that earns a strong Google position (our guide on how the major AI search platforms work covers the shared foundations), and separately, show up honestly in the communities where people already discuss your category. Founders and employees answering questions on relevant subreddits, and getting real customers to leave detailed G2 or Capterra reviews, both feed into the same citation pool.

What doesn’t work

Assuming a strong Google ranking automatically carries over is only partly safe advice, and it stops being safe the moment the query gets more conversational rather than a plain keyword search, where the overlap with Google drops sharply even for Perplexity. Treating Reddit as a channel you can game with throwaway accounts posting disguised promotion is a worse mistake. Reddit’s own moderators and voting system are reasonably good at burying that kind of content before it ever accumulates enough engagement to be worth citing, and a low-effort post that gets downvoted into invisibility does nothing for AI visibility either.

None of this replaces the basics. If your site isn’t indexed and readable by Google in the first place, none of the citation-pool arguments above are relevant, because Perplexity’s citation pool for keyword-style queries is drawn so heavily from Google’s own results.

FAQ

Does ranking well in Google help with Perplexity citations?+

Yes, more so than with ChatGPT. Ahrefs found around 65% overlap between Perplexity’s citations and Google’s top 10 for short, keyword-style queries, and roughly 81% domain overlap, both far higher than the equivalent ChatGPT figures.

Is Reddit really Perplexity’s top source?+

It was, according to a March 2026 study covering 30 million citations. An earlier Ahrefs study from June 2025 found Wikipedia and YouTube ranked higher at the time and Reddit didn’t crack the top 10. The honest answer is that this shifts, sometimes within months, so treat any single snapshot as a moment in time rather than a fixed rule.

Do G2 and Capterra reviews actually influence Perplexity’s answers?+

For B2B and software-comparison queries specifically, yes. G2 showed up as one of the platforms Perplexity leans on most for that kind of question, alongside Reddit and LinkedIn.

Can I improve my Reddit citations by posting more often?+

Volume alone doesn’t help, and posts that read as disguised promotion tend to get downvoted or removed before they gain enough engagement to matter. Genuine, specific answers from people who clearly know the subject perform far better than repeated low-effort posts.

Should I optimise for Perplexity differently to ChatGPT?+

Partly. The shared foundation, crawlable pages, clear structure, a strong Google position, matters for both. Where they differ is that Perplexity leans harder on Google’s own rankings for keyword queries, while community platforms carry more separate weight here than they appear to for ChatGPT.
